February is Heart Health Month and heart attacks are the leading cause of death in people with diabetes. With that in mind, the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital’s Diabetes Education Program presented a Heart health Fair which allowed participants to learn about strategies for a healthy heart through activities, demonstrations and presentations.
This free event was held at the Tillsonburg Community Centre Auditorium, on February 13, 2018.
“We’ve designed this fair to be very unique in that people were entertained and educated at the same time,” says Nathalie Leduc, TDMH Diabetes Education Program Coordinator. “We had cooking, exercise and Tai Chi demonstrations, interactive booths on sodium, cholesterol, diabetes as well as massages and blood pressure tests for anyone wishing them. Both exhibitors and participants had a lot of fun!”
TDMH’s Diabetes Education Program helps people with diabetes, prediabetes, and those at risk of diabetes learn to monitor blood sugar levels, adjust their diabetes medication and insulin as well as how to make healthy lifestyle changes through nutrition, physical activity and mental wellness. The Program offers both group and individual sessions. People may come to the clinic through referral by a physician or on their own accord by contacting 519-842-3611 ext. 5362.
